08.12.2021

In the third Havle Meet-up, we seek answers to questions such as “What are some of the ways in which LGBT Muslims negotiate their position as non-normative sexual subjects in a country where Muslims constitute the majority and as religious subjects within predominantly secular LGBTI+ communities? What are the existing theoretical and political frameworks with which one can make sense of LGBT Muslim lives, particularly in the context of Turkey?”

The conversation “Sexual and Religious Negotiations of LGBT Muslims in Turkey” includes the following themes:

This research shows the ways in which LGBT Muslims have developed creative approaches to the tensions that exist between Islam, sexuality, piety, and spirituality. What are some of the ways in which LGBT Muslims negotiate their position as non-normative sexual subjects in a country where Muslims constitute the majority and as religious subjects within predominantly secular LGBTI+ communities? What are the existing theoretical and political frameworks with which one can make sense of LGBT Muslim lives, particularly in the context of Turkey? Based on oral histories and ethnographic research in Turkey, this research aims to find out how LGBT Muslims reshape their sexualities and spiritualities.

Our third speaker for the Havle Meet-ups,  Zeynep Kuyumcu earned her B.A. degree in Sociology and Master’s degree in Cultural Studies. Her academic interests are gender, sexuality, and queer studies in the Middle East.
