“Social Policy Contradictions in AKP Turkey: Observations on Femininity, Poverty, and Religiosity from the “Other” Public” with Şehide Zehra Keleş

13.03.2022

We are excited to be starting again starting again the Havle Meetings, which we took a long break due to the increasing coronavirus cases!

The fifth of the Havle Meetings, where we will host Şehide Zehra Keleş as the speaker, will take place on March 17 with the title “Observations on Femininity, Poverty, and Religiosity from the Opposite’s Public”.

The general framework of the conversation titled “Social Policy Contradictions in AKP Turkey: Observations on Femininity, Poverty, and Religiosity from the ‘Opposite’ Public” is as follows:

It has been discussed many times how the social policies of the AKP period had consequences for the poor, women, and women who are not “acceptable”. The inequalities deepened by the welfare regime shaped by these policies and the hierarchies it established among women are now known. From this perspective, Şehide Zehra Keleş will tell how, as a Muslim feminist social worker who provides services from the “other’s” public, in a process where even the public is polarized, how the contradictions of her own position are met in the field and how the current social policy contradictions are experienced by different women. What he will tell will be based on his field observations and research in the following three areas: 1) housewives 2) sex workers 3) infants’ school (sıbyan mektebi) parents.

Şehide Zehra Keleş, after graduating from Marmara University Sociology and Psychology departments, completed her education in the Social Policy Master’s Program at Boğaziçi University. In this process, took part in Mazlumder Social Rights Commission, the Muslims Initiative Against Violence Against Women (KŞKMİ), and the Women in Mosques Platform. Şehide Zehra is currently working as an expert on gender and poverty policies at the Social Policies Office of the Istanbul Planning Agency. Şehide Zehra continues her advocacy activities at Havle Women’s Association.
